The movie made its public debut at the Chicago Film Festival and was praised by the respected critic Roger Ebert, who described Scorsese as an ‘important’ new director. Having studied English literature at New York University (NYU) and acquired a master's degree in film, he applied his skills to the creation of visual media, his first feature-length release being Who’s That Knocking At My Door (1967).
